Our client is looking to recruit a Senior Planning Policy Officer who is looking to build their reputation and portfolio of planning experience in a successful, rapidly growing consultancy based in East Anglia.

Breckland District covers an area of 1,305 kilometres and in one the largest rural districts in England. Nestling just on the Norfolk/Suffolk border Breckland is centred round the five main market towns of Attleborough, Dereham, Swaffham, Thetford and Watton. There are also 112 parishes in Breckland but the majority of the population is centred round the five market towns

Working under the Planning Policy Manager the successful applicant will help to support the delivery of a high quality, effective, efficient and customer focused planning policy service. The post holder will assist in any subsequent review of the Local Plan including the formulation of the spatial planning policies, including site allocations and Development Management policies, through the initiation and commissioning of evidence base documents, preparing preferred options, consultation and engagement with communities.

There may also be an opportunity to work within Development Management so some Development Management experience may be an advantage.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Providing timely, comprehensive and accurate reports and recommendations on planning policy issues
  • Lead preparation of key evidence base studies and commissions to support Local Plan or other DPDs, LDDs as required
  • Monitoring and evaluation of information and research data and dissemination as required
  • Attending and presenting to Breckland Councils Committees
  • Provide professional representation at Examinations in Public including presentation and justification of Council policy and co-ordination of case
  • Providing professional advice on planning matters to Members of the Council, the public, and others as necessary
  • Attending and presenting at various public meetings, including to Town and Parish Councils in the District
  • Provide senior level support within the planning policy service provided to Breckland Council
  • Assist in growing the clients planning policy team consultancy business and leading bid preparation and fee proposals for planning policy commissions
  • Provide support to the financial reporting of the business unit if required
  • Deputise for the Principal Planning Officer as necessary

What you will do

As Senior Planning Policy Officer you will:

  • Be concise and possess the ability to communicate at all levels, be well organised and efficient, have a positive attitude, be proactive and solve problems to produce well balanced outcomes.
  • Be willing to travel to meet their client requirements.
  • Be agile, dynamic and have the capability to work in ever changing environments.

Your experience will include:

  • Significant experience in planning policy work in a public sector environment
  • Proven experience of delivering Local Plan and related documents
  • A degree qualification in Town and Country Planning or equivalent experience
  • Membership of the Royal Town Planning Institute
  • A thorough knowledge of current planning legislation
  • Good verbal and written communication skills to include an ability to make concise focused oral presentations to a wide range of audiences
  • The ability to consider a wide range of complex issues and balance those issues to make a clear and reasoned judgement
