My Client is a world leader in supplying total engineering packages to solve industry's needs. As the world's largest independently owned forgemaster, They have a broad range of heavy steel forgings and steel castings as well as stocking steel ingot and bar.

The Company has improved its performance by more than £6million in the past 12 months. Aspects of the business plan which have aided the Company's change in fortunes include site-wide efficiency measures through continued investment and an aggressive drive towards new markets.

New orders of significant value have been won in recent months and with the business working towards its strategy and change program, now is an exciting time to join them.

They have an award winning apprenticeship program and currently employ over 30 apprentices across our site in all disciplines.

What does the role involve day to day?

Due to expansion two positions have arisen for highly motivated individuals to support the Research and Development activities within the group. The post-holder will be working on a series of activities on Research and Development funded projects. The successful applicant will work closely with the technical departments at Sheffield Forgemasters. Applicants are expected to have a good working knowledge and practical expertise in the fields of metallurgy and computer simulation. In addition, knowledge in one or more or the following areas: steelmaking, forging and casting will be beneficial.

As a Development Engineer your responsibilities will include:

  • Operate hardware and software as required for extensive computer simulations to evaluate the integrity of forgings and castings.
  • Assist in the design of manufacturing processes and the design of related items of plant and equipment.
  • Write reports and papers to contribute to and support the work of the Research and Development Department.
  • Produce and deliver presentations for colleagues, customers and auditors.
  • Carry out experiments to support technological development.
  • Operate lab equipment to support material investigations and trials.
  • Collaborate with the different company areas to tackle development projects.
  • Support with administrative tasks in the Research and Development Department.
  • Any other duties commensurate with the role.

What are we looking for from applicants?

In order for candidates to be considered for the role it is essential to have the following:

  • BEng/MEng qualification or equivalent in Engineering or Science
  • Knowledge of materials/steels
  • Ability to apply scientific principles, technical information and innovative ideas in the development of new and improved manufacturing processes and related items of machinery and equipment
  • Knowledge of computer simulations
  • Ability to tackle industrial problems using computer simulations
  • Work as a team member and interact with the different company areas
  • Ability to design and carry out industrial and laboratory trials
  • Experience of report writing and presentations
  • Ability to propose and disseminate solutions to everyday manufacturing issues.

It is also desirable that candidates have:

  • An understanding steelmaking, forging, casting & heat treatment of steel
  • Appreciation of Lean principles and problem solving tools and techniques
  • Experience working in one or all of the following environments: manufacturing/design/R&D/heavy engineering


A competitive salary will be offered

Contract type: Permanent, Monday to Friday 07:45-16:00, 37.5 hours per week
