Principle Engineer (Operations and Quality)

My client is a vibrant, cutting edge research institution. They have a fantastic opportunity for a Principle Engineer to provide technical leadership in research and development activities.

They are seeking a highly credible individual with a manufacturing process control and operational management background to take a leading role in delivery of research projects within their battery cell scale-up line. This facility is unique within the UK and will allow manufacturing and scientific challenges such as improving energy density, power density, cost, functional safety, reliability and improving lifetime to be addressed for the benefit of industry

Experience in battery manufacturing is an advantage, but not essential. The ability to work within a team involving high profile collaboration between industrial and academic partners is a key requirement and your previous experience as a team leader will be essential to ensue effective management of the team and resources.

Main Responsibilities:

To provide operational, quality and technical leadership in research and development activities, primarily working on the battery cell scale-up line.

  • To provide broad ranging technical leadership for the successful and timely delivery of outputs for a range of collaborative projects within the battery scale-up line. This includes effective: technical leadership, planning, monitoring, use of resources, training, analysis and presentation of results to meet project targets.
  • To work with the company's academics to identify the challenges and needs faced by industry in order to identify, pursue and successfully secure additional funding. To establish collaborative research activities with partner organisations.
  • To broaden the battery cell research network by actively seeking new industrial and academic partners.
  • To prioritise requests from various stakeholders to ensure timely delivery of the research programmes and to benefit the company.
  • To be responsible for process control of the activities occurring in the project workshops, including scheduling of activity and training, and to implement quality management protocols and processes.
  • To provide co-supervision of Project Engineers and Research Students to doctoral level to ensure industrial relevance and applicability.

  • Ideally you will have/be:

    • A degree in an engineering/scientific discipline
    • Significant industrial experience in the delivery of quality control, ideally in cell materials manufacture
    • The ability to provide technical leadership to a multi-disciplinary team of engineers and researchers
    • Background in manufacturing process control and/or operational management
    • The ability to analyse and solve complex problems with multiple stakeholders
    • The ability to identify key areas of innovation and research
    • The ability to influence and negotiate in a confident and professional manor, with excellent communication skills, (written and verbal) to interface appropriately with students, academics and industrial collaborators
    • Experience of working in collaborative, ideally research projects
    • Proven ability to correctly prioritise a broad range of requests from many customers, both internal and external and ensure safe operation
    • Able to work independently as well as part of a team, managing workloads of self and the team you are line managing
